Sonoco recycling plant now closed on weekends

rennie-the-recycler-pointing-up.jpgIt looks like Sonoco came up with its own solution in the wake of neighbors’ complaints about litter migrating from the site into Carver Heights. When I drove by on Sunday, the drop-off bins were gone and the area where they formerly resided was cordoned off. A sign indicated Sonoco is now closed on Saturday and Sunday. Some folks refused to accept that, it seemed, and left bags of all sorts behind.

I talked with two people who were about to add their bags to the pile and suggested they head down the street to the City of Savannah’s “Recycling Complex: Education & Drop-Off Center.” They’d never heard of it. Nonetheless they followed me to Interchange Court and were able to recycle everything they would have left at Sonoco. Plus scrap metal and “white goods.”

As Maria pointed out last week, the site is now taking glass in all three colors. On Saturday I helped staff the Savannah Bicycle Campaign table at the Youth for a Cleaner Environment Recycling Roundup, right next to a table at which City of Savannah Recycling Coordinator Anne Robinson facilitated a game that helped kids learn about recycling. She confirmed her operation has been accepting glass for about two months. The center is open from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. on weekends.
