10.10.08Tybee Island City Council Strikes AgainAt a time when we are witnessing what happens when greed and short-sightedness mix with lack of regulation and oversight, the Tybee Island City Council voted (again, last night) 4-2 to repeal the city's shoreline protection ordinance. Since its passage in 1999, the city's ordinance has provided a level of protection (from the negative impacts of ever encroaching real estate development) above and beyond what the state requires. The repeal not only strips away this additional layer of protection, but also hands jurisdiction back to the state. The four council members above voted for the repeal. 09.15.08Three Things1. Was great to see everyone out at GreenFest this weekend. Thanks to all you hard working organizers and participants for dedicating your time to create a fun, tasty and informative community event. 2. Recycling (tires, electronics, etc.) this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Check the City of Savannah website for all the details. 3. Riding home from work today, I decided that 4+ weeks is long enough for Habersham @ Victory Drive to be all tore up. 08.19.08Sustainability IndexMy new favorite sustainability blog -SusHI (Sustainability in Hawai'i) recently posted on 7th Generation's Sustainability Index. I've posted a partial index below and you can read the whole thing here. The index narrows in on a few major areas -energy, pollution, recycling- and is far from a complete picture, but it does highlight some trends while making a pretty good case for greater investment in clean tech and associated green industries. 08.12.08Sustainable SeafoodSome friends of mine went fishing this past weekend near Darrien. Over two solid days on the water they caught nothing but sharks. Having recently heard similar stories from other recreational fisher-folk I know, seemed to be a good time for a post on sustainable seafood. 08.11.08War of the Wheels?Both the Sunday NY Times and the SMN had articles about cycling on the front pages of their lifesytle sections (Sunday Styles and Accent respectively). The premise: there are more bikes on the road these days, many bikes on the road belong to bike commuting novices, people who drive cars are annoyed. 07.17.08MegaSite RevisitedThere's lots in the paper today (really, I'm not joking -recycling, dead marsh grass on Wilmington, $200 million Effingham industrial site dead . . . and that's just the front page!). My colleague, Tommy Linstroth, has an editorial that suggests a new vision for the Pooler mega site. The plan for the mega site (1,500 acres) has been to find a silver bullet type of job creating large manufacturer, such as a car company. The goal is to aggregate content about local events and projects, so there will be a central place to review everything that’s happening. The site is aimed at encouraging collaboration and information sharing between groups and individuals currently engaged in sustainability efforts. The site can also provide a snapshot of Savannah for green-minded people who are considering visiting or moving to the area.
